Element Creative Arts Magazine began in 2014 as a way to create community within Methacton School District through art and literature. With so many talented artists and writers in Methacton High School, the Element publication created a space for creative expression, as well as an authentic audience, beyond the classroom. Ms. McCauley, an Art teacher, and Mrs. van der Kwast, an English teacher, formed the Methacton Creative Arts Publishing Club to encourage students to take part in the publication process. The 8-10 student club members meet weekly or bi-weekly to edit art and writing submissions, format/design the pages, select a theme, and create a layout for the magazine using InDesign software. They also are responsible for fundraising, advertising, and promoting the magazine as well. Each year, the magazine showcases more than fifty Methacton High School artists and creative writers. All students, faculty, and staff can submit their art (photography, illustrations, drawings, paintings, computer, ceramics, etc.) and creative writing (poetry, short stories, creative essays, excerpts of novels, etc.). The 2017/18 Element: Volume 4 publication was recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English and received the award of Excellent in NCTE's creative arts magazine contest, REALM (Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines).
