• Best Buddies Host Spread the Word to End the Word Assembly

MHS Best Buddies Club is trying to raise awareness to the effect of using the r-word (retard or retarded).  "We are hoping that this assembly with make students aware of how offensive this word is for students with and without disabilities.  The r-word has become a common word used to insult someone or describe something. Best Buddies prefers to focus on people and their gifts and accomplishments. The purpose of the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign is to raise our students’ awareness of the derogatory use of the R-Word and its negative effects on people with intellectual disabilities, as well as their families and friends. This campaign is about more than just raising awareness of the R-word; it is also about changing attitudes of segregation and hate and to start accepting and respecting all people. We hope that after our assembly students will better understand the effects of the R-word and pledge to support the elimination of the derogatory use of the r-word. We hope this will promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities."
