• Arcola Students Win at Science Fair - Advance to PJAS

This week marks the 25th annual Arcola Science Fair, an event that prepares middle school students for the academic rigors of high school and cultivates their passion in the sciences. Arcola Science Fair is one of the top achieving fairs in the area, garnering many state and regional awards every year.

Top-achievers of the Arcola Science Fair will go on to compete in the county and state levels of Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science, a competition in which students must give a 10 minute oral presentation about their research projects and judges have the opportunity to ask questions. Students will be competing against top students from Montgomery County, and First Place winners from the county competition will have the opportunity to go to PennState in May for the state competition, which gives out millions of dollars in awards and scholarships to high school and middle school students.

The top 24 students from Arcola's science fair, judged by local scientists, will also be entered into the Montgomery County Science Research Competition (MCSRC), an annual science fair held at Ursinus College for high schoolers and middle schoolers. Students will have the opportunity to compete against fellow scientifically inclined students, and award winners from MCSRC will go on to compete at the Delaware Valley Science Fair (DVSF) in the Oaks Convention Center against students from the tri-state area. The top projects from DVSF will have the opportunity to go to the 2016 Intel Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). In the past, Methacton School District has done exceptionally, having sent a total of four students to the international level, an impressive feat. Arcola Intermediate School has also been awarded first place in the county in terms of total award winners for the past three years.

Thank you to everyone who makes the Arcola Science Fair possible: Mrs. Cathy Stewart, head sponsor; Mrs. Patty McGinnis and Mrs. Peggy Greene, assistant sponsors; Mrs. Lu Page, Arcola's principle; and the many parents, scientists, and alumni who volunteered their time to help set up and judge the fair.
