• Chapter 7 - Expressions and Patterns

In Chapter 7, we will learn how to write and interpret numerical expressions and plot ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.  We will also learn how to work backward to solve problems.

Vocabulary for Chapter 7:

order of operations: rules that tell what order to follow when evaluating expressions

equation:  a number sentence that contains an equals sign (=)

variable:  a letter or symbol used to represent a number

coordinate plane:  a plane in which a horizontal number line and a vertical number line intersect at the point where each line is zero

origin:  the point where the two axes meet

ordered pair:  a pair of numbers that is used to name a point on the coordinate plane

sequence:  a list of numbers that follow a specific pattern

term:  a number in a pattern or sequence

x-coordinate:  the first number in an ordered pair that corresponds to a number on the x-axis

y-coordinate:  the second number in an ordered pair that corresponds to a number on the y-axis
