Reading - Grade 6
The sixth grade reading curriculum is a standards-based program designed to meet the needs of Methacton students. The program features materials from Harcourt Storytown, a data-driven, research-based program for Language Arts instruction. The program offers opportunities for differentiation, focusing on skills and strategies at each grade level covering all genres of literature. Decoding and encoding strategies, skills, and methods are explicitly and implicitly taught.
Instruction in sixth grade reading focuses on extended and deepening understandings of the fifth grade program including decoding, vocabulary and concept development, fluency, comprehension and analysis of text, study skills, research and information, viewing media, and literary response and analysis. Listening and speaking skills and strategies are also a focus of instruction, modeling, practice, and application.
