Chapter 1 – Looking at the Earth

Earth from Space: An Astronaut's views of the Home Planet: This database has some great features, including photographs of cities, as seen by astronauts from space! NASA has published selected photos on the Internet to provide a glimpse of the NASA Space Shuttle Earth Observations Photography database of over 250,000 images.

Earthquakes: Use Yahoo Kids "Earthquake" links as a starting point to learn about earthquakes.

Pacific Tsunami Museum: in Hilo Hawaii, is dedicated to education and research on tsunamis.

Earth: from BrainPOP- watch cartoons, take quizzes, and try experiments to learn about geology and related topics such as a rock's cycle, volcanoes, our atmosphere, and more.

Forces of Nature: Four forces of nature are examined: tornadoes, lightning, tsunamis, and aurora borealis.

Hurricanes: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has “stirring” website designed for students on hurricanes.

Hurricanes 2002: This site is not for the year 2002! Here you will find up-to-date tropical weather.        

Hurricane: Storm Science: Miami Museum of Science prides itself on making learning fun!

Monsoons, Tropical Storms, and Tornados: This site from Pacific Island Travel has lots of interesting info.

Water Science for Schools: The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Water Science for Schools web site! They offer information on many aspects of water, along with pictures, data, maps, and an interactive center where you can give opinions and test your water knowledge. You can choose a topic from the menu below, get a description of our main water topics, or view our site map. The Water Activity Page has some cool activities where you can learn some interesting facts about water, take an opinion survey, and answer some water questionnaires.

World Culture - a truly awesome list of links on many, many topics of culture. Made by Mr. Bob Bowerman, 7th Grade Geography teacher.

IPL Culture Quest World Tour Links from the Internet Public Library introduce the customs, beliefs, arts and institutions from different groups of people.

Yahoo Kids: SchoolBell Cultures: This is an extensive list of websites devoted to the cultures in our world.

Google Schooltime - Cultures: Similar to Yahooligans. Googles version has many interesting webstes.

Google - People & Society (Kids & Teens) : This sites has links to holidays, religion, psychology, philosophy, etc. You can find out a lot about the country or region you are studying.

Yahoo Kids: United States – This is a gateway for students with many links about the United States in general, and to individual state website. Good one!

Netstate.com – This is a very cool website! It is easily searchable and has loads of really interesting information: state symbols, flags, outline maps, songs, etc.
